House committee cuts destroyer funding

Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins on Friday criticized a House subcommittee’s decision to eliminate funding for a new destroyer that the Navy is seeking.

The House Armed Services Seapower Subcommittee voted unanimously to deny funding the Navy’s request for a third DDG-1000 Zumwalt class destroyer.

Snowe, a Republican, said in a statement that the cuts were “very disappointing.”

Collins, also a Republican, said in a statement that the decision was “ill advised.”
