RAF's latest Merlin squadron is operational

The first 78 Sqn mission was flown on 3 December, two months after defence procurement minster Lord Drayson announced its formation.

Although the Squadron have a formal ceremony planned for early 2008, the operational stand-up was marked by a flypast at RAF Benson.

The formation consisted of a Merlin Mk3a and a Merlin Mk3.
