Australian defence budget may need boost, expert warns Labor Party

Following its general election triumph on 24 November, the Australian Labor Party has been warned by a leading expert that planned defence budget increases may not be enough to deliver procurement projects.

Mark Thomson, programme director of budget management at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI), told Jane's on 26 November: "Labor has said that they will continue with the policy of a base level defence budget growth of 3 per cent of gross domestic product until 2016.

"They have also said that they will continue with the procurement programmes that were started under the previous government - such as the JSF [Joint Strike Fighter] and AWD [Air Warfare Destroyer] programmes."
