USS Carl Vinson getting its props from Rolls-Royce

The Newport News shipyard installs four 65,000-pound propellers on the Navy ship.

USS Carl VinsonNorthrop Grumman Newport News has installed four new propellers on the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier, which is in the shipyard for a midlife refueling and overhaul project.

The propellers, 21 feet in diameter and 65,000 pounds apiece, are identical to the propellers installed on the George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier, a carrier under construction at the yard. The shipyard is also planning to install similar props on the first next-generation aircraft carrier, the Gerald R. Ford.

Each of the five-bladed propellers, made by Rolls-Royce, has more of a curved shape than propellers on past aircraft carriers. It's a new design that's expected to reduce wear and tear caused by the spinning motion in the water.
