Turkey cancels submarine upgrade program

Turkey has canceled a program to modernize its submarine fleet.

Atilay-class submarineOfficials said Turkey's Defense Industry Executive Committee has canceled a program for the upgrade of Atilay-class submarines. Turkey has maintained six Type 1200 submarines since the 1980s.

The committee, chaired by Prime Minister Recep Erdogan, terminated the program in December 2006. Officials said the Turkish General Staff and the navy decided that program funds would be used to purchase new submarines.

The Type 1200 submarine has a length of 61.2 meters and a displacement weight of 1,185 tons. The underwater platform has been equipped with eight 533 mm torpedoes.
