Peru navy adds another Italian frigate

A Lupo-class frigate during replenishment at seaPeru's navy on Monday added an eighth Italian missile frigate and President Alan Garcia said it would help guarantee national sovereignty.

The Lupo-class frigate, named the Quinones, is the fourth of its type Peru has commissioned in recent months. The country already had four other Lupo-class frigates.

The navy's commander, Admiral Eduardo Alcourt, called the new vessel "a pride for all Peruvians."

Similar frigates — about 2,500 tons in their Italian version — are in service with the Venezuelan navy.
