UK: Two new carriers are vital

The former head of the Royal Navy has spoken of his fears that the service will lose two new aircraft carriers in spending cuts.

Defence Ministers have pledged that the £3.8billion ships - vital to the Navy's future - will be built on time and within budget.

But Sir Alan West, who retired as First Sea Lord this year, said their completion was under threat amid a financial crisis.

He said in a speech: "There is sufficient money to build the ships.. and the operational requirement is still absolutely clear."
