The defence ministry has bought 20 precision weapons systems for its F-16s. Northrop Grumman Corporation (NGC) is supplying the Litening AT type 'targeting pods' in mid-2007.The purchase is a supplement to the 20 outdated LANTIRN systems purchased in the 1990s. The defence ministry had earmarked 45 million euros for the new Litening AT system.
The new system can beam onto enemy targets more quickly and accurately and from a safer distance with the help of a laser in combination with an infrared indicator. Additionally, it is equipped with a viewfinder that automatically detects and tracks a target. Due to the indicator and detector, lengthy communication with ground troops or with other fighter aircraft is no longer necessary.
