Italian opposition questions gov. on alleged sale of missiles to Lebanon

Forza Italy, the largest opposition party, on Friday requested the questioning of Prime Minister Romano Prodi and other ministers over reported plans to sell anti-aircraft missiles to Lebanon.

Forza Italy, spearheaded by former Premier Silvio Berlusconi, said a grilling request was tabled against Prodi, foreign minister Massimo D'Alema and defense minister Arturo Parisi over what was reported in an Italian newspaper about selling Aster-15 missiles to Lebanon.

The Libro newspaper, known to be close to Berlusconi, quoted an Israeli media outlet as saying that Prodi assigned Parisi to negotiate with Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Al-Siniora to sell Aster missiles, jointly manufactured by Italy and France, to prevent Israeli warplanes from violating Lebanese airspace.

The coordinator of Forza Italy party Fabrizio Cicchitto questioned possible armament of Hezbollah in a way contravening with UN resolution 1701.
