The government's flip-flop on the Trishul anti-missile defence system is far from over. Given up for dead at least a couple of times in the past, the comatose Trishul has once again been given another lifeline.
The defence ministry has extended by a year the country's integrated guided-missile development programme (IGMDP), launched as far back as 1983. After repeated revisions of the original timeframe, the programme was to end this year.
But now, with Trishul being an integral part of IGMDP, it has got another lease of life despite not becoming operational after over 80 tests and Rs 300 crore being spent on it. DRDO, as reported earlier, tried to push Trishul over the Israeli Barak-I AMD system in the late-1990s.
