German ambassador in Beirut: Marius Haas

FGS Mecklenburg-VorpommernAfter discussion, the German Bundestag agreed to Germany’s participation in the enlarged UNIFIL: a contingent of ships that will patrol the Lebanese coast -- the first German mission in the Middle East since the Second World War.

“This intervention has a historic dimension”, declared the chancellor, Angela Merkel, adding that “effectiveness and cooperation are its pillars, and its mandate has been devised for the people of the region and for the interest of Germany”.

The German ships taking part in the naval UNIFIL have arrived and the fleet is stationed in a zone up to 92 km off the Lebanese coast. The German contingent comprises two frigates: the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the Karlsruhe; the supply ship Frankfurt-Main; the Elbe and four rocket-launching gunboats. This contingent is in command of UNIFIL’s entire naval force, which includes Norwegian, Dutch, Danish and Swedish units.

Their objective is to enforce at sea the embargo on weapons provided for by UN Resolution 1701. The mission will continue until August 31, 2007.
