THREE advanced air warfare destroyers (AWDs) might not be enough to meet future defence needs and the Federal Government should consider buying one more, a defence specialist said.
In an article in the latest edition of Navy League of Australia magazine The Navy, Dr Roger Thornhill - the pseudonym for an unnamed contributor - said the world had changed in the six years since the Defence White Paper spelled out the need for AWDs.
He said Australia was now confronting uncertain threats in a world where sophisticated weaponry was proliferating and the navy was operating in more far-flung and ambiguous situations.
