Bush Administration Defends Sale of Fighter Jets to Pakistan

The U.S. government on July 20 defended its decision to sell up to 36 F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan, saying the weapons deal was a key component of the U.S. global war on terror.

"This sale is a presidential priority and a key element of the administration’s South Asia strategy unveiled in March 2005, aimed at broadening our strategic relationships with out key regional partners — India, Afghanistan and Pakistan," John Hillen, Assistant Secretary of State for political-military affairs told lawmakers.

He made his comments at a hearing of the House of Representatives International Relations Committee.
