EU states agree on Congo peacekeeping force

EU countries have agreed to send a German-led EU peacekeeping force of 1,450 troops to the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to diplomatic sources quoted by Swedish daily Svenska Dagbladet.

Provided no member states object to the mission, the Austrian EU presidency is set to inform the UN today (23 March) that the EU forces will be ready to help stave off violence in the country’s elections on 18 June.

However, it is still unclear if Germany’s conservative-led government will be able to gather enough support to send the soldiers, as every military mission requires a mandate from the Berlin parliament.
