The Navy is gearing down the San Diego hospital ship Mercy and will not dispatch it to aid typhoon victims in the Philippines, a U.S. Pacific Fleet spokesman said Monday afternoon.China’s hospital ship Peace Ark arrived off the Philippines over the weekend, but the U.S. Navy said that didn’t influence the decision on the Mercy.
“Our decision to make the Mercy fully ready to deploy and now back to reduced operating status had nothing to do with any other country except responding to the needs of our Filipino allies,” said Cmdr. Steven Curry, a Pacific Fleet spokesman.
