The U36: Biggest Fuel Cell EV So Far

U36 |This past week, the German town of Plauen became the official sponsor of the U36, the second in a new class of AIP (air-independent-propulsion) non-nuclear submarines to enter the Germany Navy.

At around $525 million a copy, the 57 meter-long, 1,500 ton displacement submersible warship is powered by a diesel electric generator while running on the surface and Siemens-developed SINAVY PEM fuel cell stacks running on compressed hydrogen and oxygen when submerged.

As with all submarines since their practical incarnation a century ago, the U36 is an electric boat that uses a diesel-powered 'range extender' to propel it on the surface at 12 knots and an impressive 20 knots (37km/h or 22 mph) submerged.
