Upper bow installed on carrier Ford


Construction of the fleet’s newest aircraft carrier, the Gerald R. Ford, reached near-completion with the installation of its upper bow at Newport News Shipbuilding.

The ship is now at its full length of 1,106 feet, equal to a 75-story building turned on its side.

Built in 19 steel sections, the 787-metric-ton piece was moved into place April 9, hanging at numerous connection points from a giant crane that ran the width of the ship.
