Christening honors 'the Father of Aegis'

Around lunchtime today, the people building the DDG-108 at Bath Iron Works are scheduled to get an informal visit by one Wayne E. Meyer.

In a Saturday morning ceremony, the DDG-108 will be christened in retired Rear Adm. Meyer's name, and if there has ever been a ship namesake qualified to talk shop with the shipbuilders, it's Meyer.

Nicknamed "the Father of Aegis," Meyer, 82, is credited with ushering the Aegis missile defense system through the Navy procurement minefield and into fruition.
