USS Klakring carried its motto, 'Freedom Through Vigilance,' until the end

Plank owners are sailors who were a part of a ship’s original crew, and Friday when the Navy decommissioned the USS Klakring at Mayport Naval Station, a handful of them stood side by side the frigate’s final crew on the vessel’s deck.

They came from across the country to see the ship off. They were in street clothes, but they stood proudly at parade rest — their arms behind them, their feet apart — just like the current sailors as their old frigate was pulled from the Navy’s fleet.

“I don’t want us to be sad about this,” Capt. Paul Flood, commander of Destroyer Squadron 14, said during the decommissioning ceremony. “I want us to celebrate the accomplishments of this ship and the thousands of sailors and officers who served with distinction on her decks.”
