Salmond: UK should move Trident to US

Vanguard-class |Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond has suggested the UK should base its Trident nuclear weapons system in the US if Scotland votes to leave the United Kingdom in 2014.

The Vanguard class submarines which carry the nuclear deterrent are currently based at HM Naval Base Clyde, in Faslane, while the missiles are maintained at the nearby Royal Naval Armaments Depot (RNAD) Coulport.

At its annual conference 19 October, the Scottish National Party voted in favour of a resolution which would see an independent Scotland seek to join NATO after expelling UK nuclear weapons from Scottish territory.
