After $700,000 in repairs, Navy ship is back in action

USS Porter |In the hours after a massive Japanese oil tanker smashed into the guided missile destroyer Porter in the Strait of Hormuz two months ago, it wasn't clear whether the warship would be able to steam back to Norfolk under its own power.

"There was a lot of talk about just doing a quick patch on her and letting her just limp home," said Rear Adm. Ted Carter, commander of the five-ship Enterprise carrier strike group, which includes the Porter. "We decided we could do better than that."

After $700,000 in repairs in the United Arab Emirates, the ship rejoined the strike group in the Mediterranean Sea this month and is expected to return home on schedule in early November.
