UK 'must operate second carrier'

[Queen Elizabeth class]The UK must operate both Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers in order to preserve relations with the US and NATO, an American thinktank has warned.

In the 'Anchoring the alliance' report published by the Atlantic Council, R Nicholas Burns, a former US ambassador to NATO, called on the UK to either operate the second carrier or submit it for use by NATO or the United States.

The decision on whether or not to operate the second Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carrier will be made during the 2015 strategic defence review, with current assumptions only allowing for one fully operational carrier.
