One of the Royal Navy's former aircraft carriers has been put through its paces in north Devon for its new role as an amphibious assault ship.Two waves of Royal Marines stormed a beach after flying in from the deck of HMS Illustrious as part of trials after she underwent a £40 million, 16-month refit to turn her into a helicopter carrier.
The 22,000-tonne ship helped the 80 Marines from 40 Commando storm Braunton Burrows, near the Royal Marines' base at Chivenor, north Devon.
