HMS Albion on 'standby' until 2016

HMS AlbionFormer fleet flagship HMS Albion has begun a five-year period of 'extended readiness' as part of a package of savings set out in 2010's Strategic Defence and Security Review.

Official figures showed that the Landing Platform Dock had cost between £17m and £38m a year to run, but those costs will be slashed with the ship's five years effectively out of action.

It is expected to cost around £2.5m to place the ship in extended readiness, with 'running costs' of around £300,000 a year.
