Troop numbers to be slashed again in 2015

Liam FoxThe size of the regular British army is to be slashed after 2015, the defence secretary will announce on Monday, in a move that will raise concerns that UK military power is becoming increasingly dominated by the country’s aircraft carrier programme.

As the government tries to come to terms with the decisions it took in last year’s strategic defence and security review, Liam Fox, defence secretary, will tell MPs that the standing army will be cut by more than 10,000 troops to just 84,000, the smallest in over a century.

The cut will be in addition to a reduction of 7,000 in army numbers that was announced in last year’s SDSR.
