Commandant calls Joint Strike Fighter essential

James F. AmosGen. James Amos, the new commandant of the Marine Corps, said Wednesday during a visit to San Diego that impending budget constraints will likely force him to make tough trade-offs between comforts for Marines on the home front and the weapons they need in battle.

The Marines’ most critical program — a special version of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter jet under development by Lockheed Martin designed to land vertically on amphibious assault ships — has been flagged for cancellation by congressional deficit fighters.

During a question-and-answer session with troops at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station, Amos was asked about housing allowance cutbacks that will require some Marines to move into base barracks.
