The San Diego-based destroyer John Paul Jones - one of the first American warships to fire missiles at Afghanistan when the current war began in 2001 -- will undergo a $31 million modernization at BAE Systems and Ship Repair next to the Coronado Bridge.
The Defense Department says the contract is part of the hundreds of millions of dollars that are being spent to upgrade and extend the life of cruisers and destroyers, many which are stationed in San Diego. (Chart of ships homeported here.)
John Paul Jones has already entered BAE's yard off Sampson Street on San Diego Bay, and will remain there until December, the DoD says.
