Christening of USS Arlington Set for Fall; Mrs. Rumsfeld to Be Sponsor

LPD-17 classThe construction schedule has slipped a bit from earlier projections, but christening ceremonies for the Navy ship USS Arlington are expected to be held in the fall.

Officials with Northrop Grumman, which is building the ship, have announced that Joyce Rumsfeld, the wife of former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, will christen the ship in Pascagoula, Miss., where construction is ongoing.

The future USS Arlington is one of a trio of 684-foot-long amphibious transport dock ships, designed to transport Marines and their equipment.
