Brown's £15bn defence pledge for new aircraft carriers and fast jets 'is unaffordable'

HMS Prince of WalesGordon Brown was accused yesterday of using the Armed Forces as 'political pawns' after pledging to spend £15billion building new aircraft carriers and fast jets.

The Prime Minister was also said to be ready to guarantee an extra £1.5billion of funding for the war in Afghanistan.

The commitments are set to be outlined as the Government prepares to unveil a Green Paper tomorrow on the future priorities of the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force.
