The last of the soon-to-be-deactivated squadron's 50 Minuteman III missiles is scheduled to be removed late this month or in early August.
Base spokesman 1st Lt. Justin Brockhoff said that because of security concerns, he can't disclose which missile will be removed last or exactly when that will happen. However, it should occur soon because Malmstrom officials tentatively plan to commemorate completion of the year's worth of work during the second week of August.
Top military officials decided in early 2006 that it was no longer strategically necessary to keep 500 intercontinental ballistic missiles on alert. While the decision was a strategic one, according to U.S. Air Force officials, the move also should save the Air Force money that can then be used for other programs.
