US Navy To Spend $59M To Fix Structural Weakness On Destroyers

The Navy plans to spend nearly $60 million to strengthen the bow of its mainstay Arleigh Burke destroyers after receiving reports of structural damage under higher-than-anticipated loads in rough seas.

The Navy said nine of the ships have suffered internal structural damage to their bows, which rise and fall during stormy weather.

Repairs will be made to all of the ships, which will number 52 once the USS Sampson is commissioned on Nov. 3. Also, the 10 remaining ships that are under construction will get beefed-up internal structures.
