Giant petals made of steel are part of the first steelwork being manufactured at Barrow for the town’s fourth Astute class submarine Audacious.The initial work on Audacious includes successful production of the first two of 12 huge steel “petals” for the forward “dome” of the submarine’s pressure hull.
Fabrication manager Gary Davies said: “We have had really excellent results and the petals produced have achieved a high degree of accuracy.
Producing the domes for Audacious will be a fabrication landmark, because it means the Barrow shipyard is completely self sufficient for all submarine steelwork.”
