First finished Collins submarine ready

A Collins class submarine could be patrolling Australian waters by the end of the year, with the first of the fully upgraded boats ready for sea trials.

Prime Minister John Howard admitted to having a strange fascination with periscopes as he inspected the HMAS Waller on Tuesday morning for a briefing on its new combat system and heavyweight torpedo.

Replacing the systems has taken six years and $921 million, after a series of problems such as periscopes that would not focus, noisy propellers, torpedoes that were too heavy and an unreliable computer system.
