Canadian Navy tests system that allows remote firing of ship’s guns

A recent experiment could lead the Canadian navy to spend $14 million on gear that would allow sailors to fire .50-calibre machine-guns by remote control from the safety of their own warships.

The test firing took place off Nova Scotia this fall aboard HMCS Summerside.

"The test went very well," said Lt.-Cmdr. Jeff Loder, an above-water warfare expert.

"The capability of a newer system like this is much more effective than a manually controlled heavy machine-gun."
