Fighter boom on as Australia signs up


F-35 Lighnig II

Defense Minister Brendan Nelson will sign a memorandum of understanding to help develop America's futuristic F-35 Lightning Joint Strike Fighter and make another down payment of $60 million during a visit to Washington next month.

The Federal Government has already contributed $150 million to the Lockheed Martin project, which has been plagued by delays and technical difficulties.

Dr Nelson is on the record as being "1000 per cent" in support of the joint strike aircraft, which is yet to undergo air trials.
