UK warships head to Middle East

HMS BulwarkThe UK is being drawn further into the crisis in the Middle East as two Royal Navy ships prepare to set sail to support a possible evacuation of Britons from Lebanon.

The Ministry of Defence said aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious and assault ship HMS Bulwark were to be sent to the region.

An estimated 10,000 British citizens in Lebanon have been warned to prepare for a quick departure if the situation escalates.

A Ministry of Defence spokeswoman stressed that the two ships had been given "no specific tasking".
