Czech Gripens upgraded to carry improved Sidewinder

The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has paid for the modifications to 14 Saab Aerospace JAS 39C/D Gripen multirole fighter aircraft leased to the Czech Republic, Jane's has learned.

According to defence industry sources, the FMV and Saab Aerospace introduced the changes to Gripen software and wingtip pylons to allow the aircraft to use the Raytheon AIM-9M8/9 Sidewinder short-range air-to-air missile in service with the air element of the Army of the Czech Republic.

"The M version of the Sidewinder has greater sensitivity in the seeker and the Swedes had to lower the noise threshold in order to enable Gripen pilots to lock onto targets," an industry source told Jane's.

According to the source, the AIM-9M version has increased resistance to flare countermeasures and during testing it proved able to remain on target despite the deployment of flares.
