Australian government backs new warplane

The Federal Government was standing by plans to spend $16 billion on a new stealth fighter jet, despite confirmation the warplane faced technical problems during its development.

Defence Department documents from last year reveal the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) had been plagued by software problems, and had a cockpit display system that was so bad it had to be almost completely redesigned.

The potential flaws with the high-tech warplane, which is being developed in the US, were identified in two risk assessments by the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO).

Defence today rejected claims the fighter was flawed and said the problems identified in the DSTO reports had since been fixed.
