The fifth South Korean-made 4,000-ton class destroyer will be launched tomorrow at a shipyard off the southern island of Geojedo, the military acquisition agency said.
Korea has sought to build six 4,000-ton class destroyers since 2002 under a project codenamed KDX-II. Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd. has already built and delivered the Navy four ships named after great kings and generals in the county's history such as Choongmoogong Yi Soon Shin, Moonmu the Great.
The new 4,200-ton destroyer will be equipped with 5-inch and 30-mm guns shooting Harpoon anti-ship missile and ship-to-air missile SM-II as well as radar-evading stealth functions. It also carries two LYNX anti-submarine helicopters.
