Portsmouth firm to repair carriers

Earl Industries gets a five-year contract worth up to $165 million for four Nimitz-class carriers.

A Portsmouth-based company has landed a five-year contract worth up to $165 million for repair work on four Nimitz-class aircraft carriers.

Earl Industries will perform the work on the USS Theodore Roosevelt, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, the USS George Washington and the USS Harry Truman, the Defense Department said.

Those carriers are scheduled to arrive at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth for scheduled maintenance work between 2007 and 2010.

Earl Industries officials couldn't be reached for comment late Wednesday, but the company often wins big portions of the carrier work performed at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. The company often handles painting and ballast tank and vent systems refurbishment, among other jobs, industry officials said.
