Clyde yards win UK's biggest defence deal

SCOTLAND'S shipyards have won Britain's biggest-ever defence contract to build two Royal Navy warships.

After months of uncertainty the £3.5billion deal has been secured, which represents a massive boost for the 2300 workers at Govan and Scotstoun.

Work on the new supersize aircraft carriers, the biggest ever to be built in Britain, is expected to begin within two years and will secure jobs for the next decade.

The carriers will be built in sections at the Clyde yards, owned by BAE Systems, and towed to Rosyth for final assembly.

Defence Secretary John Reid was expected to confirm the deal today when he unveiled the massive Ministry of Defence order in the House of Commons.
