PLA Navy's Sanya base a prime target, says People's Daily


China's nearly complete naval facility in the southern island province of Hainan would be a primary target for both air, surface and underwater attacks in a military dispute over contested territories in the South China Sea, Rear Admiral Yin Zhuo was cited as saying in the Communist Party mouthpiece People's Daily.

The PLA Navy's new base in Sanya can accommodate two aircraft carriers, according to the Canada-based Kanwa Defense Review. The 700-meter dock is twice as long as US aircraft carrier docks at Yokosuka and Norfolk and boasts the longest carrier berth in the world.

The facility would likely serve as the PLA Navy command center of the PLA Navy in the event of conflict in the South China Sea.
