HMS Sutherland begins its new service with a BANG


A Devonport-based frigate has started its new role following an extensive refit with a serious bang.

HMS Sutherland, known as The Fighting Clan, has once again proven her fighting worth by firing her 4.5in main gun for the first time since coming out of refit in March.

The firing, filmed in the South Coast exercise area, demonstrates HMS Sutherland's weapons systems were working correctly and saw the 88lbs shell shot from the barrel of her main gun at more than twice the speed of sound.
