Boeing upgrading aging AWACS for NATO forces

E-3F SentryYesterday’s issue of AIN Online reported that several NATO air forces are upgrading and modernizing their Boeing 707 AWACS planes. The Airborne Warning and Control Systems planes have unmistakable top-mounted radar domes.

According to the release, Boeing is currently performing four major modernization programs under its airborne surveillance command and control, portfolio. Boeing Defense, Space and Security developed the E-3 Sentry using Westinghouse radar and 707 airframes in the early 1970s and produced 68 planes.

Production was discontinued on that model in 1992. The E-3 Sentry has been replaced in production with a next-generation model using Boeing 767 airframes.
