USS Illinois submarine set to be christened this year

USS Illinois (SSN-786)Illinois is about to be introduced to a nuclear-powered submarine named for the state.

The USS Illinois, still under construction on the East Coast, is a $2.7 billion black behemoth set to prowl the seas after its christening, expected June 27.

Navy Cmdr. Jess Porter, the submarine's captain, is bringing some of his crew to Chicago for two days of public appearances that begin Thursday with a breakfast and presentation at the Union League Club of Chicago.
