Nick Xenophon says Australia’s submarine-building reputation trashed by defence officials while overseas

HMAS WallerDefence officials on a tour of Europe left at least one of the contenders to build the Australia’s new submarines with the impression that overseas construction was preferred.

The Advertiser has confirmed that Defence representatives, including Defence Materiel Organisation chief executive officer Warren King, appeared to discourage one shipbuilder from pitching to build the subs in Australia.

South Australian independent Senator Nick Xenophon has accused the officials of trashing the nation’s reputation and yesterday asked the Government whether DMO questioned Australia’s ability to build the boats.
