Joan McAlpine: A £4.6billion investment shows Trident is nowhere near dead in the water

Vanguard class SSBNIs Britain a democratic country? You might think the answer is obviously yes. We will all be heading out to vote in the general election in a few weeks after all.

But democratic countries should reflect the views of electors and the parliament who represent them.

Why then have successive governments been ignoring parliament when it comes to replacing the Trident nuclear missile system?
