France and Egypt reach preliminary deal on sale of fighter jets

Dassault RafaleFrance and Egypt are in advanced talks to finalize a deal that would see Cairo receive 24 Dassault Aviation-built Rafale fighter jets and a naval frigate.

The deal, which is worth an estimated 6 billion euros ($6.88 billion), was close to being signed, according to France's Les Echos newspaper.

The jet, while one of the most expensive, is considered to be one of the most effective and sophisticated fighter jets in the world and Cairo has been in talks with Paris to replace their aging fleet of 18 Dassault-made Mirage jets.
