MoD lift submarine safety ban in Scottish lochs

Astute class SSNThe National newspaper today has published a report about the lifting of a safety ban on nuclear-armed and powered submarines using lochs in the West of Scotland.

The report reveals that the MoD has made the secret decision to lift the ban – which had been imposed following concerns about a series of safety and operational flaws – in Loch Goil, off Loch Long and Loch Ewe in Wester Ross.

The Defence Nuclear Safety Regulator imposed the ban on nuclear submarines in May 2013 after safety exercises identified problems with the emergency plans designed to protect the public in the event of any accidents.
