Bremerton-based USS John C. Stennis completed flight deck qualifications Friday after a 16-month, $240 million maintenance period at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility.
The aircraft carrier and its crew departed Dec. 1 for the waters off Southern California to meet Carrier Air Wing Nine and conduct flight operations for the first time since its last deployment a year and a half ago. For many, it was their first time participating in flight operations.
"It's scary but exciting at the same time," said logistics specialist Seaman Edward Mitchell, of Fayetteville, North Carolina. "There are propellers spinning, planes taking off and landing, things that you normally only see in movies."
